    NZMusician:
    By Jacob Connor

With the title referencing the Stooges and William Burroughs popping up in first track Opium, you know you’re in for a disorienting, druggy ride. Brother Love have existed for 17 years and specialise in gutter trawling trash rock. The aforementioned opener swings between spacious revery and head down, thrash out sections. The spirit of Iggy looms large and Gelatine, while propulsive, suffers from a wasted been-here-before vibe.
Sound quality overall is suitably hazy and sludgy. Death of the Golden Church is a throwaway (and frankly quite aggravating) mishmash of sound effects and tape hiss reminiscent of Sharkweek.
Love Sick Dog, at a minute and a half is a fine example of brevity. It’s also important to include the word ‘dog’ in a punk rock song title. That’s it, four songs, 13 minutes and change. The whole EP seems to beam in from a flophouse, battling overwhelming apathy to piss in a spitbowl. Released on Powertool Records, a home for offbeat street creatures, I’d rather listen to this than those Camp Rock Disney kids.

about

PowertoolRecords Auckland, New Zealand

Rough Church was conceived after the demise of Ferdinand, the band that existed from 1994-2003. Baseball, Concrete, rare steamy rain, tumbleweeds and lost poems about dirty chimneys are what influence this band. It spits out indie pop classic jams that get us compared to everything from Minutemen, Pixies, Broken Social Scene, WAR and Grand Funk. Deal with it! We can't get away from it. ... more
