  'See How They Love Us' is the product of artist/musician Lynn Morresey's self-imposed basement incarceration while he recorded this album. Cellar Uncle is a character he dreamed up who has lived in a cellar for many years and whose world view is based only on his surroundings and how he imagines the outside world to be.
  
  The result is a gothic and nightmare-tinged album, with the music paralleled by Morresey's striking paintings which adorn the CD cover and booklet. As reference points, Morresey is influenced by Bauhaus, Nick Cave, Joy Division and the films of David Lynch; and his own past experiences in rehab and therapy give him plenty of material to draw upon to shape his dark visions. As well as his own compositions, he performs his takes on Rodgers and Hammerstein's My Favourite Things and Roy Orbison's In Dreams.
  
  A disturbing and often challenging listen, 'See How They Love Us' is nonetheless an intriguing album, with cover artwork that is worth a look on its own merits. Available from Powertool Records. www.powertoolrecords.co.nz ... more
