‘The Tide Will Wear You Down’ is the second album recorded in Finland by New Zealand songwriter Ben Barrett with friend and producer Mikael Hakkarainen.

The album is made up of songs written and demoed while Ben was living in London, Paris and Tokyo between 2003 - 2005. It came together with recording sessions at the analogue Pink Noise Studio over several trips to Finland in 2006 & 2007. As with ‘Aggressive Pedestrian’ (2003) the album features Mikael and his brother Tuomas, with the other musicians appearing drawn from Mikael’s band The Siberians and assorted friends.
The mixing process took around a year with mixes emailed between Helsinki and London. The album was then mastered in London by Nick Abbott in 2008.

2016 marks this album’s first official release on Powertool Records, a decade since its recording began.

Ben met Mikael Hakkarainen for the first time in 2002 while Mikael was studying Sound Engineering in Auckland, NZ. Mikael had recently released the self-produced ‘Sounds Like Siberia’ album and recorded the double A side ‘Halfway Up Tonite’ single for Ben’s band ’Joed Out’ as part of his SAE coursework. Following a road trip around the South Island of NZ the pair conceived the plan for working on an album of Ben’s songs together in Finland on Mikael’s return.

The ‘Aggressive Pedestrian’ album was recorded over two months in 2003 and released the following year on Powertool Records. Mikael H & The Siberians toured New Zealand in 2004 with Feyodor in support featuring the same musicians.

Since making the Finnish albums, Ben has released several ambient instrumental collections under his own name and made music with London band ‘Life of Birds’. Mikael is still releasing music with The Siberians and with other artists.

PowertoolRecords Auckland, New Zealand

Rough Church was conceived after the demise of Ferdinand, the band that existed from 1994-2003. Baseball, Concrete, rare steamy rain, tumbleweeds and lost poems about dirty chimneys are what influence this band. It spits out indie pop classic jams that get us compared to everything from Minutemen, Pixies, Broken Social Scene, WAR and Grand Funk. Deal with it! We can't get away from it. ... more
